The Technophile category is for discussing all aspects of current technology, including home-brew projects. We talk about tools and resources we enjoy, computer hardware and software, operating systems, showing off your project or setup, code you're writing, code you want to write, and other geeky stuff here. Hey guys, I want to share that I sometimes use BlueStacks to play Android games on Windows. It works pretty well, just like a regular Android phone. From what I can see it's not as fast as a phone for a few things, but overall it's good. I don't play tons of games, but it's cool to play some mobile games on your TV or main computer. I also keep it as a virtual backup device for some of my mobile games, in case my phone disconnects from the game and I have trouble logging back in. Something I didn't think about before trying it, was that those mobile games look HUGE on my 55-inch TV, compared to my 6-inch phone screen, it's pretty impressive. You can also use j…

I've been thinking about ways to tell stories with TTI, and build out what I've had in the back of my mind since at least the Paranormalis days. I've always wanted to find a way to manifest an expanded universe centered around a place like Time Travel Institute, and so that's what I'm going to do. A while back, I talked about the release of Unreal 5 and how great it looked. The big bottlenecks that prevented this sort of thing before are now pretty trivial... The bottleneck now is articulating the idea. Translating from brain to pixel. Or something like that. I completed the initial build of the new 3D printer this weekend, but got a bad Y-axis motor. Big pain in the b…

A team of researchers at the University of Cambridge have powered a microprocessor for a year using blue-green algae. The power-producing cyanobacteria were enclosed in an AA battery-sized plastic and metal container with an aluminum anode, and connected to an Arm Cortex-M0 microprocessor. Scientists think the electrical output was the result of a bio-electrochemical process in which the algae generated electrons which moved across bacterial membranes to the aluminum anode. The bio-battery worked in both light and dark conditions, powering the microprocessor from February to August 2021 (and an additional six months afterward), and it continues to produce current. "It's s…

Here and there I read about AI artists. DEBATE: Do they simply mimic and copy other works of art and photos based on their programming, or are can they be creative? "If an AI lacks the self-awareness to reflect on its actions and experiences, and to communicate its creative intent, then is it truly creative? Or is the creativity still with the author who fed it data and directed it to act?" On one hand, we humans refer to images in our brains when making art, and so does AI, but does the lack of emotion make it a programmed response rather than creative, unique art? AI is not self aware. What are your thoughts? https://www.sciencenews.org/article/artificia…

We built a new PC recently, and had to get creative with the current shortage of graphics cards. We ended up discovering Ryzen APUs (where the graphics are built into the processor), but there definitely is and has been a chip shortage. This video explains the future implications of this pretty well: Anyone notice this?

I was inspired to post about this by the new show Extant, by Stephen Spielburg. In the show, an android boy was created and then adopted by his creator. His "father" sees him as his child, not a robot, even though he needs to have his batteries recharged once in a while. Because he is "new" to the world, he learns exactly the same way a human child learns. He just doesn't seem to laugh or smile. They even send him to school, but in the show, he started learning way too fast so they were considering doing some adjustments. My question to you is: Could you love an android child, or would it be just a robot to you? Because he looks a…

Elon Musk is developing Starlink Broadband that sounds a lot like Satellite, but maybe it's a bit improved. He said you just plug it in and go. Space X already has 500 orbiting routers up there. This is kind of cool, because that means they can have better internet access on the moon, and maybe Mars can tap in. What do you think? I wonder if it will be so expensive that nobody can afford to use it. Source: https://www.cnet.com/news/elon-musk-shares-details-on-starlink-plug-in-home-broadband-setup/

Elon Musk's Starlink sounds pretty cool up front. He is going to release thousands of tiny satellites, all of which will orbit lower than traditional satellites, in an effort to provide high speed internet to the world. I appreciate this because I live out in the country and have one really sucky internet provider. The cost is going to be a flat $500 for the equipment, which you will own, and then $99 a month. The equipment fee is high, but the monthly fee is less than what I pay for mine. What about reliability? What happens when there is bad weather? This is the only part that worries me. Here is a link to it. It is being beta tested in some areas. …

Before you had the internet the USENET existed in late 1970's. If the posts are archived they should exist. Does anyone know of a reader app that can access the archives? I went to YA News sites in 1990's and later. Thanks.

Many rumors are going around that cash is going to disappear soon and we'll all be using digital money. This poses many questions and frankly, not all banks are accepting it, yet. My bank won't let me buy crypto currency. They say they have it blocked for security reasons. I was going to buy $25 to experiment, but voila, blocked when I tried to transfer money. (I totally forget which software I was trying to use). So, others are able to cash in on this, but I would have to switch banks if I wanted to. Cons: - Government has total control. They can stop all transactions if they wanted to. They can block gun sales. They can decide to only allow you to b…

I seriously need help by someone that has expertise in this topic. So, I want to add advertising to my wordpress site. I tried Ezoic, but it constantly tells me my site isn't integrated even though I've done everything they wanted me to. They mentioned an ad.txt file So, I research that and find that I had to make one through adsense by Google. Well, the problem is that I don't know which folder to put it in because I have a messy hosted directory -- my wordpress is in a subfolder..... so I copied ad.txt into a whole bunch of directories... and still, Google can't find it. I am at wit's end. I just want to earn a monthly income to pay for the site, just lik…

So, I bit the bullet and lazily bought my daughter an el cheapo laptop. My intention isn't to get into a brand war, so I'm going to leave that part out. For supposedly being the latest and greatest, the thing is super slow. It reminds me of an old 386, and this thing is brand new. It frustrates her sometimes. It only has 4 gigs of RAM, which isn't TOO BAD per se, but the CPU is as slow as molasses. The poor girl has Windows 8 as well. What a pain in the A$$ Windows 8 is!!! It was my son's turn to get a laptop, so I picked him out a refurbished one with an older CPU, but it's a dual core and man, what a difference!!!! It was the same price as my daughter's too. I…

Just to repeat myself, I do not believe we are being visited by time-travellers. If there is anybody who knows about tablets/memory cards/technology stuff, then can you explain this? A couple of days ago, I formatted a micro sd card to use in a tablet. Once formatted, I used software program called airdorid to wirelessly transfer files to my tablet from my laptop. When I opened up the folder for the external sd card, I noticed there was several empty folders already there....the strange thing though, when I hovered over them, each folder had a date such as 07/17/2054 etc...... just wondering why are these empty folders on the micro sd card and why have they been time-s…
