Anyone here into astronomy? I'm looking at getting a telescope and doing some livesteaming with that in the next few months. There's a ton out there but I'm looking for something "middle of the road" for someone relatively new. I don't want anything super basic; a good starter option that'll get the job done for most things. We live way out in the country now so the skies are spectacular. I'd like to attach something like this: https://www.telescope.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=102083 (Maybe not that exact thing, but some way to get the view into Twitch for you guys to see).

I found these apparent "close ups of Jupiter" during my internet adventures, but there's no context or information. I vaguely recall seeing these before associated with some kind of UFO or abduction claim, but that was long ago and I'm probably conflating memories. Anyone seen these before? NASA wants to buy Moon rocks from private companies NASA is officially in the market for Moon rocks β and itβs willing to pay any company thatβs capable of scooping them up. Today, the space agency is putting out a call for proposals from companies, challenging them to snag small samples of rocks on the Moonβs surface. The companies will have to prove that they have collected lunar samples in some kind of small container by sending pictures and data to NASA. If satisfied, NASA pledges to purchase the samples for between $15,000 and $25,000. Eventually, NASA will retrieve the rock samples and bring them back to Earth. NASA ultimately wants the exchange to ha…

How do you feel about the improvement of space equipment? Some things make me think that they came to us from another time. Some from the future, some from the past. Here https://www.skyrora.com/blog/uk-space-news I read an article about installing new equipment, which should speed up the data transfer process. How likely is it that we will ever get instant data transmission over long distances? Is instant data transmission only possible for quantum communication? Or are there other ways?

In order for life to exist on the planet, liquid water must be present on its surface. Calculating the likelihood of this scenario seemed almost impossible before. It was previously assumed that terrestrial planets receive water randomly, as a result of a large ice asteroid hitting the planet's surface. In a new study, scientists from the GLOBE Institute at Copenhagen University, Denmark, have published breakthrough results showing that water may have been present in the planetary matter even during their formation phase. According to the team's calculations, this scenario could have occurred in the case of Earth, Venus and Mars. In the future, Johannessen and his tea…

Asteroid to fly past Earth just before Election Day, NASA says https://www.foxnews.com/science/asteroid-fly-past-earth-election-day-nasa-says It's only 6.5 feet in diameter and hardly a threat, but news found it necessary to mention it. It seems like every asteroid becomes breaking news for some reason.

NASA plans to put a base on the moon by 2020 http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/space/2006-12-04-nasa-moon-base_x.htm By Traci Watson, USA TODAY WASHINGTON Γ’β¬β NASA plans to surpass the Apollo missions by establishing a base on the moon that could lead to a permanent human presence on the lunar surface, space agency officials said Monday. For the first time since President Bush announced in 2004 that American astronauts would return to the moon, NASA has specified what it plans to do once there. No human has set foot on the moon since 1972. That final stay, the longest, lasted three days. Under the plans outlined Monday, human habitation of the moon w…

JAKARTA, Indonesia β The first commercial mission for SpaceXβs Starship and Super Heavy launch system will likely take place in 2021, a company executive said June 26. Jonathan Hofeller, SpaceXβs vice president of commercial sales, said the company is in talks with prospective customers for the first commercial launch of that system roughly two years from now. βWe are in discussions with three different customers as we speak right now to be that first mission,β Hofeller said at the APSAT conference here. βThose are all telecom companies.β SpaceXβs Super Heavy booster and Starship upper stage are being designed to launch up to 20 metric tons to geostationary tra…

Fermi Telescope Finds Giant Structure in our Galaxy So, NASA found what they call a "structure" or bubbles in the Milky Way. Could these be other universes? They are really too far for us to reach, but if we could, we should try to enter them and see what happens. They say these contain thousands of galaxies, which is why I wonder if we are accessing other universes or even other timelines for that matter. I think it is amazing that we can even detect these things. Source: https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/GLAST/news/new-structure.html

So, how exactly do astronauts do their business with no gravity? https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/how-will-astronauts-poop-on-the-moon-new-nasa-challenge-calls-for-innovative-ideas/ar-BB169lta NASA is having a contest to see who can create the best space toilet. Are you up for the challenge? I don't know how anyone can test their creation on earth. We have gravity! But you can win $35,000 So, what are your ideas for a space toilet? (Thinks of Howard from Big Bang). Don't use mom's meatloaf as a test.

Comets are all over the place, it seems, but it doesn't stop scientists from studying them. This particular comet, Borisov, contains high amounts of carbon dioxide, which means it may have formed around a red dwarf. It was detected on August 30, 2019. Source: http://www.sci-news.com/astronomy/interstellar-comet-2i-borisov-unusual-chemical-composition-08345.html What are the benefits of studying comets? Have scientists discovered anything really unusual? Share your thoughts.

Talk about When Two Worlds Collide. When black holes collide, they give off vibrations which are actually gravitational waves. The first were detected in 2015 and then again in 2017. Source: https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/04/gravitational-waves-reveal-unprecedented-collision-heavy-and-light-black-holes Now, the next question is, what actually happens when they collide?

"The Planetary Society announced Wednesday that a small satellite it launched a month ago had successfully demonstrated the ability to change its orbit with a solar sail." This is pretty cool. We are learning how to steer satellites. It makes them more useful because you can move them elsewhere. They call it solar sailing. They're going to check out an asteroid with it. https://spacenews.com/planetary-society-declares-solar-sailing-mission-a-success/

The eclipse of April 8th, 2024 will be crossing the United States. Totality starts in Texas, then cuts diagonally across to Maine. This will provide numerous people in the U.S. the opportunity to experience the event. Cosmically Curious as to who plans on experiencing this event? Total solar eclipse maps of April 8, 2024 What is really exciting, is the path of totality crosses over where I live. So I .... get to experience the event from home, needing only to go from my refrigerator to my back porch. How cool is that ?

Featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not! The Man In The Moon Believe it or not, one man is buried on the Moon. His name is Eugene Shoemaker, and he pioneered planetary science. Since time immemorial cultures all across the surface of the Earth have seen a face in the side of the Moon facing us. Curiosity getting the better of us, all sorts of legends and fables have been written about who the man in the Moon is and how he got there. Dante wrote that the fratricidal Cain was banished to the Moon. In Chinese traditions, the goddess of the Moon, Changβe winds up on the moon after drinking an immortality elixir. The first man on the Moon, however, was Neil Arms…

WASHINGTON β SpaceILβs recent decision not to mount a second lunar lander mission is only the latest sign of delays and retrenchment among international ventures planning missions to the moon. In a June 25 tweet, SpaceIL announced that, contrary to announcements made shortly after the its Beresheet lunar lander crashed attempting a soft landing on the moon April 11, the non-profit organization would not build a second lunar lander. βThis time, we will not go to the moon. Beresheetβs journey to the Moon was already received as a successful, record-breaking journey,β SpaceIL announced. βInstead we will seek out another, significant objective for Beresheet 2.0.β Whi…

WASHINGTON β The next major milestone in the development of the spacecraft designed to take humans back to the moon will be a three-minute test flight this week to ensure astronauts can escape in the event of an emergency. NASA plans to conduct the Ascent Abort-2 (AA-2) test at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station July 2 during a four-hour window that opens at 7 a.m. Eastern. A weather forecast issued June 30 by the U.S. Air Forceβs 45th Space Wing calls for a 70 percent chance of acceptable weather, with cloud coverage the primary concern. In the test, a refurbished solid rocket motor from a Peacekeeper missile, carrying an Orion spacecraft mockup, will lift off from S…
