Where do they get a pair of lunar rocks, which claimed to be originated on far side of the Moon, has sold for a whopping $330,000 at a meteorite auction in New York? According to the organisers, the Moon rocks were fourth largest ever to be made available to the public. Other hot items shipped at the auction included a piece of the famed “Peekskill meteorite,” which fell to Earth and crushed a Chevy Malibu in Westchester in 1992 ($16,250) and a tiny shard of Mars that musician Herbie Hancock carried in his pocket during a performance at The Kennedy Center in Washington last year for $9,375. It's possible that 1) the rock is so old that it is from the pre-geocentric rotational period or 2) it is ejecta from a meteor strike and found its way to the near side of the moon. Sure, it's also possible that it is all a hoax. I'm sure that Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon conspired to make a movie, never go to the moon and spend 100's of milions of 1960's - 1970's dollars while we needed every dollar we had to prosecute the war in Viet Nam for the purpose of... [ blank ] Please fill in the blank because I don't know what to place there. While you're at it explain why the "hoax" meterite is so valuable. Earth-bound meterites go for $3 to $1,000 a gram. A $300,000 meterorite would weigh anywhere from .6 pounds to 350+ pounds depending on the quality and scarcity of the class. Paying $300,000 for a meteroite is market driven. All of the authentic moon rocks are Government property, with the exception of the "trinkets" sent out by Nixon, and they are not available for sale on the "open" market. A real moon rock is nearly priceless and would go for millions of dollars on black market auctions. That being said, Darby's statement of it being ejecta is most likely to be correct except that, the material landed on the Earth and was found here as a meteorite. I'm not a geologist so I must wonder also, "What is the difference between a far side or near side moon rock?" Here on Earth we don't have east side and west side rocks... do we?
